Marie Kondo’s love of organizing started young. Born and raised in Tokyo, she would straighten and organize the book shelves at school while other students played. Later, as a 19 year old college student at Tokyo Women’s Christian University, she started her own organization consulting company.

Marie Kondo is the creator of the KonMari Method. According to her website, the KonMari Method encourages tidying up by category. You begin with clothes then books, papers, komono, which is miscellaneous items, and ending with sentimental items. You hold the item in your hands, ask yourself if it still sparks joy. If it does, you keep it. If it doesn’t, you thank the item for it’s service to you and then let it go.
